July 16, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Engineer Abdul Rashid Shaikh, MP from Baramulla, Jammu and Kashmir, has got a big relief from the court. Delhi’s Patiala House Court has allowed MP Engineer Abdul Rashid Sheikh to attend the upcoming monsoon session of Parliament in custody. Patiala House Court has directed the jail authorities to take MP Abdul Rashid Shaikh to Parliament in custody from July 20 to August i.e. whenever Parliament is in session. So that they can attend the monsoon session of Parliament.

Actually, this is not the first time that Engineer Rashid has approached the court for permission to participate in parliamentary proceedings. Earlier, the court had granted him custodial parole to attend the budget session, allowing him to participate in the Lok Sabha as an MP. He was also given parole to vote in the Vice President election. Overall, the court has from time to time given relief to him to participate in parliamentary proceedings.

Why is MP Engineer Rashid in jail?

Engineer Rashid was arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in 2019 under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in a terror-funding case. NIA alleges that he was involved in raising funds for separatist and anti-national activities in the Kashmir Valley. Since then he is in judicial custody in Tihar Jail, Delhi. However, Engineer Rashid has always denied the allegations of NIA.

Know who is Engineer Rashid

Engineer Rasheed is the founder and patron of Jammu and Kashmir Awami Ittehad Party (AIP). While in jail, he contested the Lok Sabha elections as an independent candidate from Baramulla parliamentary constituency. In this election, he surprised everyone by defeating veteran National Conference (NC) leader Omar Abdullah by a huge margin.

More than 4.72 lakh votes were received
