Taking an important step forward in the preparation for the three-tier Panchayat elections, the Uttar Pradesh State Election Commission released the final voter list on Wednesday. The list has been published at the district level in all the districts. In this list prepared after disposal of claims and objections, a new 9 digit state voter number has also been allotted to every voter, which will make the identification process more transparent and systematic.
The Commission had released the provisional voter list on 23 December 2025, in which a total of 12.69 crore voters were registered. During the revision process, about 1.41 crore names were removed from the list, while 40.19 lakh new voters were included. In this way there has been a change in the total number of voters in the final list. The list has been published through the District Magistrates. The State Election Commission will now compile the data received from all the districts and prepare a comprehensive report.
With the release of the final voter list, activities regarding the notification of Panchayat elections and the entire election program are expected to intensify. Recently, Allahabad High Court had expressed displeasure over the delay in Panchayat elections and had sought information from the Commission about possible election dates. The Commission took a total of 169 days to prepare the final list. Immediately after the release of the list, there were problems in downloading it due to technical reasons in some districts, for which the Commission’s team is continuously working to solve it.
Why is the new state voter number important?
This new unique 9 digit number will make voter identification easier. The possibility of duplicate voting will be reduced. This will help in strengthening the electoral process digitally. This system will improve voting management in the elections to be held at Gram Panchayat, Area Panchayat and District Panchayat level.
Let us tell you that now 12 crore 58 lakh 51 thousand 570 voters will be able to use their franchise for Panchayat elections in the state. Before the revision of the voter list, there were 12 crore 29 lakh 50 thousand 52 voters, the number of voters has increased by 29 lakh 1 thousand 518. Names of 2 crore 32 lakh 24 thousand 805 new voters have been added in the voter list revision. A total of 2 crore 3 lakh 23 thousand 287 voters’ names have been deleted due to names being included at more than one place, change of address, death of the voter and other reasons.
