Lord Vishnu accepted the wish of the goddess. Since the goddess was born on the Ekadashi date of the lunar month, she was named Ekadashi. Lord Vishnu gave a boon that this date would be very dear to him and any devotee who observes a fast on this day and worships him, his sins will be destroyed and he will get spiritual benefits. Since then the tradition of Ekadashi fast started and it started being counted as one of the best days to worship Lord Vishnu.

According to the scriptures, Ekadashi means eleven. There are five sense organs, five action organs and the eleventh mind in our body. The basic objective of Ekadashi fast is to remove these eleven from the evil path and immerse them in the devotion of God.
