Delhi’s birth rate is lower than Finland… Elon Musk expressed concern over India’s falling fertility rate, said – the figure has reached below the replacement level.

June 7, 2026 by Uma Shankar

SpaceX CEO and billionaire Elon Musk warned on Saturday that India’s birth rate has now gone below the replacement level required to maintain the population. That means India’s population will start decreasing soon. Musk wrote on social media platform X, India’s birth rate has fallen below the replacement level. It had already fallen below this level among the most educated people many years ago. Musk said this quoting data from a media outlet named AF Post.

In fact, AF Post has claimed that for the first time in the history of India, the total fertility rate of the country has reached below the replacement level. In just a decade it has come down from 2.3 to 1.9. The situation in the capital Delhi is said to be even more worrying, the fertility rate here is only 1.2, which is less than developed countries like Finland. Experts believe that the declining birth rate can have a serious impact on the country’s population, economy and youth population in the long run.

Women are having less children than required

AF Post referred to an article by The Economist, the topic of this article was that India’s population will soon start declining – perhaps very rapidly. Last year, in the State of World Population report of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), it was said that India’s total fertility rate has come down to 1.9 births per woman. This is less than the replacement level of 2.1. This means that on an average Indian women are having less children than the required number. The current population of India is more than 1.46 billion and in the year 2023, India had achieved the position of becoming the most populous country in the world, leaving China behind.

According to the UNFPA website, ‘The fertility rate has declined in the last few years, yet India’s population is more than one billion. Despite significant improvements in health and education, large inequalities still exist. Maternal mortality rates and gender discrimination remain high. Early marriage and pregnancy are responsible for the high number of maternal deaths among women under 24 years of age. Experts say that the effect of decreasing fertility rate will be visible in the coming times.
