The Delhi government is going to take a very important step towards strengthening the public transport network in the country’s capital Delhi. Under this, a plan has been made to include 2800 fully electric air-conditioned low-floor buses in the DTC fleet under the PM e-Drive Scheme (Prime Minister Electric Drive Revolution Innovative Vehicle Enhancement) of the Government of India.
This proposed fleet includes 1400 nine-meter and 1400 twelve-meter electric buses. This initiative will improve access to public transport across Delhi and will also strengthen ‘last-mile connectivity’. Especially in those areas of Delhi where facilities are less or which are located on the outskirts of the city.
Capital to Delhi Transport Department Delhi The performance of the nine-meter electric buses already in operation in India has shown very positive results, especially in meeting the needs of local and feeder transport.
DTC will strengthen public transport
Based on this experience, the objective of adding new electric buses is to create a balanced fleet that will better meet the needs of more congested routes and feeder connectivity of the surrounding areas.
This initiative is part of the larger vision of the Delhi government to increase the number of DTC buses for public transport across the city and also to increase the share of zero-emission based transport resources. As part of its long-term strategy, the Delhi Government aims to increase the total number of public transport buses in Delhi to approximately 14000 buses by the year 2028-29, so as to ensure better connectivity, greater service coverage and more convenient transport services for the passengers across Delhi.
Currently, about 4300 electric buses are running in Delhi, making it one of the largest electric bus fleets in the country. Delhi government aims to increase this number to about 7500 electric buses by the end of this year, which will further strengthen clean and sustainable public transport.
Big transport plan of Rekha Gupta government
Delhi Transport Minister Dr Pankaj Kumar Singh said that in the next phase of expansion, Delhi Government is working on a plan to include 3330 additional electric buses under PM E-Drive Phase-II. These also include 500 electric buses of seven meter length, which will play a very important role in further strengthening the feeder services and ‘last-mile connectivity’. This will further improve the bus network and will also make access to public transport easier in residential, rural and areas where its facilities are currently less.
The Delhi government says that under the able leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the Delhi government is continuously taking such measures with the aim of modernizing the public transport infrastructure, improving the passenger experience and continuously promoting environment-friendly transport methods. Along with the inclusion of electric buses, necessary charging and power infrastructure will also be created at the bus depots, so that the bus fleet can be electrified on a large scale.
This initiative of Delhi Government will significantly help in reducing vehicle pollution, improving air quality and providing clean, safe and reliable public transport system to the people. Through continued investment in electric mobility, the Delhi government is committed to developing a modern, eco-friendly public transport system keeping in mind future needs in line with the national sustainability goals.
