In the case of lathi charge on students at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, Chief Justice (CJI) Surya Kant had commented on lawyer Narendra Mishra that he was wasting the court’s time. Now a petition has been filed on his behalf in the Supreme Court. However, the CJI had later clarified that he had told Mishra not to waste the court’s time by demanding action against Delhi Police on the basis of just a letter without filing a proper petition.
After this, now lawyer Narendra Mishra has filed a petition in the Supreme Court demanding registration of FIR against the policemen who lathi-charged the students and used tear gas. The petition also said that all electronic and digital evidence, CCTV footage, body-worn camera footage, drone footage, mobile phone recordings, social media videos and posts, police wireless and communication records, call logs, control room records and deployment orders should be preserved.
What did CJI Surya Kant say to the lawyer?
CJI Surya Kant told lawyer Narendra Kumar Mishra not to waste his time and the court’s time. Advocate Mishra said that students are raising important issues, like proper conduct of NEET exam and the need for reforms in NTA. Interrupting the lawyer, the CJI said, “Thank you very much.” When the lawyer mentioned the videos showing police excesses, the CJI said that he was not interested in those videos and did not even have time to watch them.
Students protest in Delhi
Students from across the country and Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) workers were protesting at Jantar Mantar and other parts of central Delhi. They were repeatedly demanding accountability and resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in the matter of exam paper leak. Meanwhile, the protesters had planned to march to the Parliament House, but the Delhi Police intervened and stopped them. However, after the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on July 25, the protest has now ended.
