Former Chief Minister of Karnataka and senior Congress leader Siddaramaiah announced his retirement from electoral politics. He has said that he will not contest the 2028 assembly elections. He gave this statement during the K.R.Pete Krishna Jayanti program organized at K.K.R.Pete in Mandya district. On the other hand, his supporters have demanded him to remain in politics for the next 10 years.

He further wrote, the people of Varuna seat are once again pressurizing me to contest elections, but I have decided that I will not contest any election in future. Earlier, when I used to contest elections, the people of the seat used to give us money and ensure our victory, but today the situation is not like this.
Siddaramaiah gave reason for not contesting elections
Siddaramaiah wrote, I am now 79 years old. There is still one and a half year left in the term of our government. By then I will be 81-82 years old. My health is not as good as before. Now it is not possible to work with the same enthusiasm as before.
Because the political arena is tainted today, I will not contest the 2028 assembly elections. But, in active politics, I stand as a voice for people’s difficulties and happiness.

He wrote, I will be 82 years old by 2028. Then 50 years of my political life will be completed. I started my political journey as a Taluk Board member in 1978. I have seen both defeats and victories, but I am satisfied that I did not act against the principles I believed in, nor did I betray my conscience.
He said that now the time has come that if we contest elections, we will have to pay money to the people. Today’s politics has completely deteriorated. There seems to be no basis for honest politics. In this background, I have decided that I will not contest further elections. For five decades, the people of the state have treated me as their own and have lovingly guided me. This debt is on me. Therefore, my future life will also be dedicated to serving the public.
Siddaramaiah has been the Chief Minister of Karnataka twice
Although the fans present at the event objected to his announcement and said that he should remain in politics, but only Siddaramaiah repeated his statement.
Siddaramaiah has completed two terms as the Chief Minister of Karnataka. Overall, he served in office for more than 8 years, making him the longest serving Chief Minister in the history of Karnataka.
In the first term, he successfully served as the Chief Minister for 5 years from 13 May 2013 to 15 May 2018, while in the second term, he served as the Chief Minister of Karnataka from 20 May 2023 to 3 June 2026. He has been elected MLA nine times.
Siddaramaiah had given such statement earlier also
When Siddaramaiah became Chief Minister for the first time in 2013, he had told the media that this would be his last election. Later, before contesting the 2018 assembly elections from Chamundeshwari and Badami assembly constituencies, he again reiterated that the 2018 elections would be his last elections.
Speaking in Mysore in April 2024, he had said that he is now 77 years old. By the end of this term he will be 81-82 years old. At that time his health will not support him and he will not be able to work with full enthusiasm. Therefore he said that he will not contest the 2028 assembly elections.
