July 28, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Harjinder Kaur Won Silver Medal In Commonwealth Games 2026: Indian weightlifter Harjinder Kaur has once again brought glory to the country by winning the silver medal in the women’s 69 KG category in the Commonwealth Games 2026. Harjinder also recorded his new personal best record by lifting a total weight of 227 kg. This is India’s 11th medal in the Commonwealth Games 2026. He achieved this historic feat by lifting 101 kg in snatch and 126 kg in clean and jerk. Earlier, he had won the bronze medal in 71 KG category in the year 2022.

What is the secret of Harjinder Kaur’s strength?

The journey to success of Harjinder, a resident of Mehs village in Nabha, Punjab, has been full of difficulties. His family lived in a single-room house, where he looked after six buffaloes and did contract farming. In her childhood, Harjinder used to work in the fields cutting fodder for cattle and operating chaff cutting machines. This gave strength to his arms, which later became the foundation of weightlifting.

Harjinder, the youngest daughter of her father Sahib Singh and mother Kuldeep Kaur, was fond of sports from the beginning. While studying in Government Girls School, Nabha, she started playing Kabaddi, the popular game of Punjab. She used to cycle 5 kilometers daily to reach the ground for practice. After taking admission in college at Anandpur Sahib, coach Surinder Singh included him in the college Kabaddi team. After this, when she reached the sports wing of Punjabi University, coach Paramjit Sharma noticed her skills.

A wonderful journey from tug of war to weightlifting

Seeing the extraordinary strength of his arms, Coach Sharma first included him in the tug of war team. After proving his strength in tug of war, on the advice of his coaches, he moved towards weightlifting. Initially, it took some time to change the game, but Harjinder’s hard work proved that hard work done in the right direction never goes waste. Today, the result of his hard work is that he has once again created history by winning a medal for the country.
