Defense Minister Rajnath Singh has approved the country’s first big solar power project on defense land in Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh. Under this project, a 250 MW capacity solar power plant and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) will be established on about 850 acres of vacant defense land. According to the Defense Ministry, this is the first project of its kind, in which large-scale solar power generation and energy storage facilities will be developed on defense land.
The objective of this project is to strengthen the energy security of defense establishments and reduce dependence on conventional electricity. After completion of the project, clean energy will be provided to many defense establishments located in Uttar Pradesh. Apart from this, huge savings are also expected in the long run in government expenditure on power purchase.
NTPC will develop the project
NTPC will develop this ambitious project. The company will implement the project through a competitive bidding process, so that power can be provided to defense establishments at the lowest cost. The Defense Ministry, Indian Army Headquarters and Directorate General of Defense Estates (DGDE) will also cooperate in the implementation of the project.
Big step towards self-reliant and green energy
The Defense Ministry says that this project is an excellent example of national security, energy security, technological innovation and environmental protection. This will not only meet the energy needs of the defense sector, but will also help in promoting clean energy and reducing carbon emissions.
Model will be made for future projects
According to the Defense Ministry, the Sitapur Solar Project will serve as a model for future solar and energy storage projects to be developed on defense land. Once completed, the project will be one of the most important renewable energy projects in the country established on defense land.
