Why do we clap in front of Shivalinga?

Lord Shiva is considered the god of meditation, silence and samadhi. In the form of Nataraja, he is also the master of divine rhythm and chanting of mantras of creation, hence sound has special importance in the worship of Bholenath. According to religious beliefs, the simultaneous sound of bells, conch shells and claps during Aarti makes the atmosphere virtuous and pleasant. Chanting this mantra is also considered helpful in concentrating the mind of the devotees. The purpose of clapping in front of Shivalinga is not to awaken God but to awaken the devotion and positive consciousness hidden within us.
