Chaturmas 2026: If entering the house is prohibited in Chaturmas, then can one buy a new house?

July 18, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Buying home in Chaturmas: The time of Chaturmas is considered very special and sacred in Hindu religion. Chaturmas is of four months. It is also called Chaumasa. There is a religious belief that at this time Lord Shri Hari Vishnu, the sustainer of the world, goes into Yoga Nidra. During the four months of Chaturmas, God leaves the worldly work and rests, hence this time is also called the sleeping period of the Gods. Chaturmas starts from the day of Devshayani Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Ashadha month and ends on Devuthani Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month.

This year Devshayani Ekadashi is on 25th July. That means Chaturmas will start from this day. Then on 20th November, on the day of Devuthani Ekadashi, Lord Vishnu will wake up from yoga nidra and take charge of the world again. Since, during the time of Chaturmas, God is absorbed in Yoga Nidra, hence auspicious works like marriage, engagement, tonsure, naming ceremony, housewarming etc. are prohibited at this time because these works do not yield auspicious results at this time. This is the best time for worship, chanting, meditation etc. So let us know whether a new house can be bought even after entry into the house is prohibited during Chaturmas?

There is no restriction in buying a new house in Chaturmas

Although there is a ban on house entry during Chaturmas, there is no restriction of any kind in buying a new house at this time. A new house can be purchased in Chaturmas. In these four months you can book, register or finalize the property. You can do it, but keep in mind that do not enter the newly purchased house during Chaturmas, because Griha Pravesh cannot be done at this time and it is inauspicious to enter the new house without it. House warming or entering a new house at this time can bring many problems in life.

Religious significance of Chaturmas

There is a complete stop on auspicious works during Chaturmas. The time of these four months is considered an opportunity for self-purification, restraint and spiritual progress. By staying away from worldly pleasures for four months, a sense of discipline, devotion and service is developed within oneself. This is the reason why this period has been given special importance in all the three traditions, Sanatan, Jain and Buddhist.
