July 27, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Chaturmas 2026 Date: The time of Chaturmas is considered very special in Jainism for meditation, introspection and adherence to non-violence. During this time, Jain monks and nuns usually stay at one place and do religious meditation and sermons. In Jainism, it is not only seen as a ban on travel, but it is also considered a time to protect living beings and deeply follow the principle of non-violence. In the year 2026, the period of Chaturmas is from 25th July to 20th November. During this period, Jain monks and nuns stay at one place and spend time in penance, meditation, self-study and religious activities. But have you ever wondered why Jain sadhus do not travel during Chaturmas? Let us know.

What is Chaturmas?

Chaturmas literally means a period of four months. Chaturmas is also considered important from religious point of view in Hindu religion. In Jain tradition too, this time has special significance for sages and saints. According to religious belief, during the time of Chaturmas, it gives an opportunity to take a break from external excursions and look within oneself and introspect.

Why don’t Jain monks travel during Chaturmas?

Nonviolence is considered one of the most important principles in Jainism. Jain monks and nuns take special care to ensure that living beings are not harmed in any way in their lives. During the rainy season, many small creatures and small creatures living underground come out. Due to rain, life activities in trees and plants also increase. During such times, there is a possibility of unknowingly harming small creatures by continuously traveling on foot. For this reason, Jain monks and nuns prefer to stay at one place during Chaturmas. Its main objective is to protect any living being from suffering and to follow the Mahavrat of non-violence.

Adherence to non-violence is the biggest reason

In Jainism, it has been taught to have kindness and compassion towards every living being. According to Jain philosophy, the soul is considered to reside even in the smallest living beings. Therefore, harming any living being comes under the category of violence. On normal days, Jain monks and nuns travel from one place to another on foot. During this time they propagate religion and tell people the way to live a right life. But during the rainy season, there is a greater possibility of harm to the small creatures present on the ground. In such a situation, doing sadhana by staying at one place is considered a better way to follow the principle of non-violence.

Why is Chaturmas called an inner journey?

The life of Jain saints is generally associated with traveling and preaching religion. While traveling on foot from one place to another, he gives the message of religion and non-violence to the people. But during Chaturmas, this external journey stops for some time. During this time, sages and saints concentrate on their mind, thoughts and deeds. This is the reason why Chaturmas is also called the time to take a break from external journeys and start an internal journey. This period provides an opportunity for introspection. The person tries to understand his behavior and thoughts and moves towards eliminating his shortcomings.
