
The Indian Navy successfully carried out a high-risk maritime operation by safely removing and neutralizing an unexploded missile warhead from an oil tanker. A major accident was averted by this action of the Navy Marshall Islands flagged crude oil tanker MT Olympic Life was coming to Kochi from Fujairah, UAE on 26 May 2026. Meanwhile, information was received about an explosion in the structure of a ship near the Oman coast.

Missile warhead found in ship’s fuel tank
After receiving information from Indian Navy’s Information Fusion Center Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR), Kochi-based Southern Naval Command immediately sent an expert EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) team.
Investigation revealed that part of the missile had penetrated the outer structure of the ship, crossed several compartments and got stuck inside the fuel tank. There was a danger of a major explosion if a live warhead was found in the fuel storage area.
The operation was carried out with utmost care
The Navy’s EOD team carried out the entire operation in a phased manner. First the security process was completed, then with the help of modern technology the detonation system of the warhead was identified and isolated.
After this the missile warhead and its associated debris were taken out safely. The recovered explosive material has been sent to a safe place for further investigation.
The Indian Navy said that this operation is an example of its technical expertise, maritime security capability and rapid response in emergency situations.
