Bandar Review: Bobby Deol’s film is a horrifying story of a helpless ‘hero’, will this dark cinema of Anurag Kashyap shake the mind?

June 5, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Bandar Review In Hindi: Whenever Anurag Kashyap’s name comes up in the world of entertainment, a world automatically gets created in the mind where there are no rules and regulations and no glittering life. His cinema always tries to highlight the reality of the society, which people often turn away from. This time, ‘Lord Bobby’ i.e. our own Bobby Deol has fit into the frame of his dark cinema. The name of the film is ‘Bandar’ and it has been released in theatres.

If you are going to the theater this weekend and have this hope in your heart that bobby deol You will be telling a sweet love story while waving your hair, or you will have a happy ‘happy ending’ smile on your face after the movie is over, then change your mind immediately. In fact, to be honest, cancel that ticket right now! Because ‘Bandar’ is not a common masala film. It brings before us that side of human nature which we keep hidden behind our everyday ‘cultured’ life. This time Nikhil Dwivedi is also associated with Anurag Kashyap as a producer.

Know what is the story of ‘Monkey’?

This is the story of Samar Mehra (Bobby Deol). Samar is not a common man, he used to be a very big and shining superstar of his time. You might remember, her biggest hit song at one time was, “Come On Baby Dil Kisko Degi”. Even today, Samar is holding tightly to the hangover of that old era, that old fame and that false arrogance. That means in real life he is a victim of ‘Arrested Development’. Simply put, he is middle-aged, but his mind is still like that of a child, who has not been able to come out of his stubbornness.

The old servant of Samar’s house still calls him ‘Baba’. There is a picture of his old superhit film ‘Barsaat’ days decorated on the nightstand next to his bed. He roams around in his luxurious house wearing Superman boxers. But behind this showiness there is also a great physical helplessness. Samar has a serious spinal problem, due to which he always wears a back brace. In the film, this bandage is not just a medical bandage, but Kashyap has used it as the soul of Samar. This shows that this big looking man really has no backbone left, he is completely hollow and helpless from inside.

The balloon of Samar’s ostentatious masculinity and luxurious life gets punctured when suddenly he is accused of a very serious crime, i.e. sexual harassment and rape. To know whether Samar has really committed this crime or has he become a victim of some big conspiracy, you will have to go to the theater and watch ‘Bandar’.

Know how the film is?

Anurag Kashyap Those who know his cinema closely, know that for him ‘masculinity’ is not a thing to be glorified, which means that such a concept in his films is sure to blow the air. In ‘Bandar’ also he shows the story of those men who consider themselves above the laws and regulations of the country. Those who consider it their pride to raise their hands on the weak and who think that the whole world will dance to their tune. Like always, here too Anurag mercilessly pulls such thinking men from the sky and throws them on the ground.

Directing and Writing

The beginning of the film i.e. the first half feels a little different. Perhaps due to the involvement of producer Nikhil Dwivedi, the initial part of the film has a slightly commercial cinema feel, but as the story progresses, Anurag Kashyap returns to his original and old colors. A very interesting contradiction is seen in the writing of the film. When Samar is sent to jail, Kashyap has shown the conditions there without any filter. The director has not spared any effort in showing shots of the filth spread inside the jail and the human feces stuck in the toilet. Watching these scenes, a strange question suddenly arises in your mind as a viewer, “Does any accused, no matter how big his crime is, deserve such a worse and inhuman punishment?”

This is where the real cleverness of writing comes to the fore. Kashyap raises the big question that is this dirty face of our system more terrible than the alleged crime of an accused? There is another amazing scene in the film, on one side 100-100 people are living in barrettes of 20 people each, eating dirty food and on the other side in this jail, devotional songs and melodious bhajans are being played on the loudspeaker of the jail early in the morning, meaning only Anurag Kashyap can create such a strange and funny contradiction.

However, despite such excellent grip, the film falters a bit in its last part i.e. the climax. At the end of the film, statistics (text slates) of fake rape cases happening in India suddenly start showing on the screen. Now, whatever may have been the motive of the makers behind this, but in today’s times where even children and animals are not being spared, this twist of the film seems like a forced attempt. This thing slightly weakens the film’s very neutral and strict stand.

Bobby Deol Film Chart

Will the acting of the actors be able to impress?

Talking about acting, after a long time Bobby Deol is being seen in a solo lead film, where the entire story rests on his shoulders. Bobby Deol has lived this ‘man-child’ role of Samar very accurately. Bobby has given life to the character of a helpless man who is not even capable of bearing the burden of his mistakes with his eyes and body language. Sometimes he seems very poor to you on the screen, and sometimes you get extremely angry at his strange actions.

But the real backbone of this film is its female characters. Despite having male writers and directors, the women characters have been created very intelligently and deeply. Sanya Malhotra has played the role of Samar’s sister Suhani and she has done an amazing job. Suhani brings on screen the deep pain and inner anger of a sister who knows very well that her brother may not have been proven a criminal in the eyes of the law, but in real life he is definitely a mean and hollow person. Be it calling her brother an ‘idiot’ during a conversation with the lawyer or publicly scolding him for his misbehavior during the jail meeting, Sanya has shown her magic in every scene.

Saba Azad as Samar’s girlfriend Khushi has played the role of a very ‘sorted’ and practical girl very well. She is not one of those girls who bear everything in the blindness of love. As soon as the truth and serious allegations come to light, she withdraws her steps without wasting any time. Whereas, Sapna Pabbi has beautifully captured all the shades of suspense, pain and regret in the character of ex-girlfriend Gayatri. Rest of the characters have also given justice to their roles.

see or not

‘Bandar’ is not an entertaining film to watch with the whole family while eating popcorn. This will make you extremely nervous. It will force you to think and talk about issues that we often shy away from.

If you are a fan of Anurag Kashyap’s dark, satirical and no-nonsense solid cinema and want to see a completely new, unheard and dangerous side of ‘Lord Bobby’, then ‘Bandar’ can be included in your watchlist.
