
In Assam, the cabinet of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was expanded today. 12 new ministers were included in the cabinet. Four ministers took oath last month along with the Chief Minister on May 12. Now the number of ministers including the Chief Minister in the Assam Cabinet has increased to 17. However, there can be a total of 19 ministers in Assam i.e. two posts are still vacant. While Himanta Biswa Sarma has given a chance to a first-time MLA like Neelima Devi, the veterans who came to BJP from Congress before the elections have not been given a place in the cabinet. The most prominent name among these is that of former Congress President Bhupen Bora who left Congress with great force and joined BJP. Bhupen Bora won the MLA seat on BJP ticket but the Chief Minister has not yet expressed confidence in him for the ministerial post.
Which ministers are in the cabinet expansion?
Of the 12 MLAs who took oath as ministers today, 11 are from BJP, while one is from ally Assam Gana Parishad. BJP’s Ashwini Ray Sarkar, Ashok Singhal, Bimal Bora, Biswajit Daimary, Jayant Mallabarua, Kaushik Rai, Krishnendu Paul, Neelima Devi, Piyush Hazarika, Dr. Ranoj Pegu and Susanta Borgohain have been given place in the cabinet expansion. Whereas Keshab Mahant from Assam Gana Parishad has been made minister. On May 12, BJP’s Rameshwar Teli and Ajanta Neog took oath along with the Chief Minister, while Assam Gana Parishad President Atul Bora and Bodoland People’s Front’s Charan Boro also took oath. In this way, Himanta cabinet has 13 ministers from BJP quota, two ministers from Assam Gana Parishad and one minister from BPF. Out of total 17 ministers, 12 are those who were part of the cabinet during Himanta’s first term also. Vishwajeet Daimari, who was the Speaker of the Assembly last time, has been made a minister this time.
3 new faces, Neelima Devi becomes minister
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has included some new faces in his cabinet. These include BJP’s Ashwini Ray Sarkar, Neelima Devi and Sushant Borgohain. Neelima Devi has become MLA for the first time and has directly joined the government. Neelima Devi has been the state president of BJP Mahila Morcha. Neelima won the election from Mangaldai seat on BJP ticket. He had defeated the Congress woman candidate by a margin of about 24 thousand. With the entry of Neelima Devi and Ajanta, the number of women ministers in the Assam cabinet has reached two (Ajanta Neog and Neelima Devi).

Voting for the 126-seat Assam Assembly was held in a single phase on 9 April 2026. The results were declared on 4 May. BJP had won 82 seats, while its two major allies Bodoland People’s Front had won 10 seats and Assam Gana Parishad had won 10 seats. Congress was reduced to just 19 seats. Badruddin Ajmal’s AIUDF won 2 seats, Raijor Dal won 1 seat and Trinamool Congress won one seat. After this massive victory, on May 12, Himanta Biswa took oath as CM for the second consecutive time. At that time, 4 ministers had taken oath with him and now 12 new ministers have been included in the cabinet expansion.
