The use of Artificial Intelligence is increasing rapidly and big tech companies are encouraging their employees to adopt AI tools. Meanwhile, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has said that AI cannot be the solution to every problem. He believes that it is more important to use the right AI model for the right work. He advised employees to focus on the results and actual usefulness of AI instead of just increasing its use.
Use of AI is increasing rapidly in Microsoft
During a conversation on the New York Times’ Hard Fork podcast, Satya Nadella said that the use of AI within Microsoft has increased rapidly. He also humorously described himself as a “tokenmaxer,” that is, someone who makes more frequent use of AI tools. However, he said that after the initial enthusiasm towards any new technology, it is important to understand what is to be achieved from it. According to Nadella, the goal should not be to just use AI more, but to see whether it is adding real value and better results to any work.
Advanced model is not necessary for every problem
Nadella clarified that Microsoft’s thinking is not to use the most powerful AI model for every task. He says that using highly advanced models for common problems is not right in terms of both resources and cost. He said that there is no need to use “frontier model” for “non-frontier problems”. The company’s focus is on choosing the appropriate AI model for different tasks so that along with getting better results, the balance of cost and computing resources is also maintained. According to him, AI should not be used only for trends but on the basis of utility.
Copilot auto mode will provide the right solution
Giving the example of Microsoft Copilot’s auto mode, Satya Nadella said that modern AI systems can themselves decide which model will be most suitable for a particular task. This eliminates the need for users to deal with technical complexities and allows for a better balance between system performance and cost. He advised employees to focus on the results they want to achieve rather than focusing on AI usage statistics. Nadella believes that a successful AI strategy in the future will be one in which the right technology is chosen for the right problem, rather than using the most powerful model everywhere.
