
Bindyarani Devi Wins Bronze Medal: 27-year-old Indian weightlifter Bindiarani Devi from Manipur has registered another achievement for the country by showcasing her talent in the Commonwealth Games 2026. In these games held in Glasgow, Bindiarani performed brilliantly and won the bronze medal in the women’s 58 KG category. This is his second consecutive medal in the history of the Commonwealth Games, last time he had won the silver medal. This is India’s sixth medal in the Commonwealth Games 2026.
Bindiarani’s brilliant performance in Glasgow
To win India’s sixth medal of the Commonwealth Games 2026, Bindiarani lifted a total weight of 199 kg. Bindiyarani Devi lifted 83 kg weight in her first snatch attempt. Whereas, in the second attempt she managed to lift 85 kg weight. After this he lifted 87 kg weight in the third attempt. Then, in the clean and jerk round, Bindiyarani Devi tried to lift 110 kg weight in her first attempt, but her attempt failed.
But Bindiyarani Devi made a strong comeback and lifted 112 kg in the second attempt of the clean and jerk round. With this he confirmed his bronze medal. In this event, Nigeria’s RF Lawal won the gold medal with a new Games record of 229 kg, while Canada’s Teschero won the silver medal.
Mirabai considers Chanu as her idol
Born in 1999, Bindiarani has come out of the same Manipuri Academy from where Olympic medalist Mirabai Chanu started her career. Bindiarani made her first big mark at the international level in the World Championships in December 2021, when she won gold by defeating the Tokyo Olympics champion in the 55 kg clean and jerk category. However, this journey of success was not easy. There was a time when he did not even have money to buy professional weightlifting shoes.
Bindiarani has always considered veteran weightlifter Mirabai Chanu as her idol. Recalling her initial days, she had once told that when she was new in the camp, Mirabai had fully supported her, from adjusting to the environment to teaching her the nuances of training. When Mirabai came to know that Bindiyarani did not have money to buy expensive lifting shoes, she herself bought the shoes and gifted them to her. According to Bindiyarani, this simplicity and guidance of Mirabai played an important role in giving the right direction to her career.
