Kuwait has officially approved the defense cooperation agreement with Pakistan after almost three years. After the royal decree of Kuwait, this agreement has now come into force. This deal between the two countries was signed on June 11, 2023, but it took time to complete the legal process. Now the Kuwait government has made it a part of its law. The objective of this agreement is to increase cooperation between the armies of Kuwait and Pakistan. Under this, both the countries will work together in areas like military training, defense education, intelligence sharing, logistics system and defense technology.
According to Kuwaiti media, the royal decree states that the agreement between the Government of Kuwait and the Government of Pakistan regarding cooperation in the defense sector is approved. Also, Kuwait’s ministers have been instructed to implement this agreement according to their respective departments.
What is there in this defense agreement?
A total of 12 points are included in this agreement. In this, the framework of cooperation between the armies of the two countries has been decided. The agreement covers subjects like military training, contacts between defense institutions, joint activities and sharing of experiences. Apart from this, both the countries have also agreed to protect sensitive military information, maintain confidentiality and protect technical information related to the defense sector.
Rules related to intellectual property rights and financial matters have also been decided in the agreement. If there is any dispute between the two countries regarding this agreement, it will be resolved through mutual negotiations. Any dispute will not be taken to the international court or any third party.
Why is approval important after three years?
Pakistan and Kuwait had signed this agreement in the year 2023, but it took almost three years to implement it. Now after getting the approval, defense cooperation between the two countries is expected to get new momentum. Pakistan already maintains military relations with Gulf countries. This agreement with Kuwait will give Pakistan an opportunity to share its military training and defense expertise, while for Kuwait also cooperation with Pakistan is important from security point of view. Amid the changing security situation in the Gulf region, Kuwait is strengthening defense partnerships with many countries.
Why important for Pakistan?
Pakistan’s army has been involved in training and security cooperation with Gulf countries for a long time. This agreement with Kuwait can strengthen Pakistan’s regional role. However, it is not yet clear how large a scale military exercises, defense procurement or other activities will take place under this agreement. But it is certain that this deal will formally strengthen the defense relations between the two countries.
Overall, this agreement, which came into force after three years, opens a new path for military cooperation between Pakistan and Kuwait and can strengthen the partnership between the two countries amid the changing security equations in the Gulf region.
