Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) state in-charge and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh has raised the issue of breach of privilege and contempt of the House with the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, accusing the Prayagraj administration and police of obstructing his parliamentary duties. He has sent a letter in this regard demanding strict action against the guilty officials.
According to the allegations, Sanjay Singh said that in the closed-door meeting held at Prayagraj Circuit House on June 1, students preparing for various competitive examinations, unemployed youth and common citizens were coming to express their problems. These youth wanted to convey their views to the Parliament on serious issues like paper leak, examination cancellation and delay in recruitment processes.
Civilians and student leaders were forcibly stopped.
MP Sanjay Singh alleged that the local administration and police adopted a coercive attitude and forcefully stopped citizens and student leaders from meeting him. During this time, two innocent student leaders Ashutosh Pandey and Pankaj Pandey were also arrested, who are in jail till the time this letter is written. This entire action was allegedly taken under the direction and supervision of ADM (City) Satyam Mishra and other concerned officials. Unreasonable restrictions on movement near the Circuit House were imposed by the police and citizens were warned, preventing them from handing over their complaints and documents to the MP.
Sanjay Singh told the responsibility of MP
Sanjay Singh has clarified in the letter that the responsibility of an MP is not limited only within the Parliament House, but listening to the problems of the public and collecting their evidence is also an integral part of his representative responsibilities. This conduct of the local administration is completely contrary to the spirit of Article 105 of the Constitution, parliamentary traditions and the principles of independent functioning of MPs. This reflects abuse of powers and disregard for democratic accountability by the executive.
What are Sanjay Singh’s demands from the Chairman?
- This matter should be accepted as a question of breach of privilege and contempt of the House.
- The entire matter should be sent to the Privilege Committee for investigation.
- Explanation should be sought from Prayagraj ADM (City) Satyam Mishra and other concerned officials on his dictatorial conduct.
- Punitive action should be recommended against the officers found guilty, so that the dignity of Parliament and public dialogue is not disrupted in future.
