After the uproar after the NEET paper leak, preparations for changes in the National Testing Agency have started. Taking major action, NTA has fired 47 officers. Legal as well as criminal action will be taken against some of these officers. The total workforce of National Testing Agency is 221. NTA There are only 24 government deputation staff. The remaining 197 people i.e. 89% of the workforce are on contract and outsourced. Recently an attempt has been made to increase manpower by adding 16 senior posts.
- Deputation/Permanent…24 filled…. There are total 39 posts under sanction. 15 posts are still vacant
- Contractual… 73 Technical roles like Advisor, Consultant, Young Professionals and 1 Software Developer.
- Outsourced …124 Support functions like legal help, data analysis, housekeeping.
- New posts: To strengthen the agency, 16 new senior posts have been created – Directors and Joint Directors.
- These new posts have been created under the Central Staffing Scheme.
Formation of NTA to conduct entrance exam
Union Minister of State for Education Sukant Majumdar, in reply to a written question in the Lok Sabha, said that the National Testing Agency (NTA) was created as a self-sustaining autonomous organization to conduct entrance examinations for admission/fellowship in Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs).
There are a total of 39 permanent posts in NTA, which are filled through deputation. Apart from this, NTA also recruits staff/officials on short-term basis as per requirement. To strengthen NTA, 16 posts (i.e. 8 at Director level and 8 at Joint Director level) have been created for NTA through the Central Staffing Scheme.
Know the status of staff in NTA
NTA hires contract/outsourced staff as per requirement. A total of 73 people (which include 1 General Manager Communication, 1 Senior Advisor, 3 Advisors, 5 Senior Consultants, 44 Consultants, 1 Senior Software Developer, 1 Office Assistant, 17 Young Professionals) have been hired on contract and 124 people (like Data Analyst, Consultant, Junior Consultant, Legal Associate, House Keeping etc.) Are outsourced.
Depending on the nature of the examination, NTA involves field level people and officials, including Observers, City Coordinators, Center Supervisors, and members of State Level Coordination Committees (SLCCs) and District Level Coordination Committees (DLCCs). These people work in coordination with State and Union Territories (UT) authorities, centrally funded higher education institutions, and government schools like Navodaya Vidyalayas and Kendriya Vidyalayas to conduct various examination related activities on a large scale across the country on assignment basis.
More than 270 examinations have been conducted
Since its launch in 2018, NTA has conducted more than 270 examinations with over 6.6 crore candidate registrations. So far in 2026, NTA has conducted 12 examinations, in which more than 65 lakh candidates have registered. NEET (UG) Examination, 2026 was conducted on 3 May 2026 in 5432 centers in 565 cities in 13 languages. NTA conducted NEET (UG) re-exam on 21st June 2026 and declared the result. Has been successfully declared on 16.07.2026.
