Six years after the murder of Intelligence Bureau (IB) staffer Ankit Sharma (26) during the 2020 North-East Delhi riots, a Delhi court on Monday convicted former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councilor Tahir Hussain and four others in the case. Hussain was suspended by AAP immediately after the incident. Now convicted of murder and rioting along with other charges. However, he was acquitted of criminal conspiracy charges.

  1. 17 to 23 February 2020: There was a lot of tension in many areas of North-East Delhi like Jaffrabad, Chandbagh, Karawal Nagar, Maujpur and Khajuri Khas areas in support and protest of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
  2. 24 February 2020: Violence broke out in North-East Delhi regarding CAA. Incidents of stone pelting, arson and firing took place in many areas. Despite the deployment of additional police forces, violence continued to increase.
  3. February 25, 2020: Ankit Sharma had gone out of his house in Chand Bagh to collect household items when he went missing. According to eyewitnesses and police investigation, the violent mob dragged him away and brutally murdered him, and threw his body in a drain. According to the police, he was stabbed 52 times.
  4. February 26, 2020: His dead body was found in the drain. He was one of the 53 people who lost their lives in the communal violence.
  5. February 26, 2020: An FIR was lodged based on the complaint of Ankit’s father Ravinder Kumar, in which he had named Hussain as an accused and alleged that rioters operating from his building had carried out the attack.
  6. 27 February 2020: Delhi Police constituted SIT and forensic teams visited and inspected the incident site.
  7. June 3, 2020: The Delhi Police Crime Branch filed a 650-page charge sheet in the Karkardooma court, naming 10 people, including Hussain, as key conspirators behind a “deep-rooted conspiracy” to target and eliminate IB staff.
  8. March 23, 2023: A sessions judge at the Karkardooma court formally framed criminal charges against Hussain and 10 other co-accused, finding prima facie evidence for trial under IPC sections like murder, criminal conspiracy, rioting and promoting enmity between religious groups.
  9. 13 July 2026: Karkardooma Court convicted former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councilor Tahir Hussain and four others in the North-East Delhi riots case. The remaining four, Nazim, Qasim, Javed, Anas, have been convicted under the same charges except murder. However, the court acquitted Hasin, Firoz, Gulfam, Soyeb, Sameer Khan and Muntazim in the case.
