David Rush, a former officer of America’s intelligence agency CIA, has been accused of fraud. The investigating agencies claim that they collected assets worth about $40 million (about Rs 382 crore) by taking advantage of a secret loophole. A large amount of gold, cash and expensive watches have been recovered from his house.
According to the New York Post report, David Rush had allegedly created a fake secret program. He described it as a very secret mission related to America’s national security. The allegation is that on this pretext he used government resources and did not let anyone suspect anything. Rush described this program as related to the continuity of government operations. These are such schemes, which are used to continue the functioning of the government during war, natural disaster or any major crisis.
What was found in Rush’s house?
Investigation has revealed that through this alleged scheme, Rush collected a large number of gold bricks over a period of several months. Later the FBI raided his home in Virginia. 303 gold bricks, about $2 million in cash and dozens of expensive watches were recovered from there.
Government lawyers have described Rush as a master manipulator. He says that he had given wrong information related to his education and work experience to get important posts in government agencies. The investigating agencies are also finding out whether Rush had also included some of his co-workers in this secret program. However, they were not told that Rush’s program was fake.
Questions raised on CIA
This case has raised serious questions on the surveillance system of CIA. People are asking how such a secret system created for national security continued to be misused for so long. David Rush is currently in custody. The court has refused to grant him bail because the authorities fear that he may abscond. The investigation into the case is still ongoing and more charges may be filed.
