Delhi High Court on Tuesday gave a big decision regarding Sonam Wangchuk. The court ordered to shift him from Safdarganj Hospital to Medanta. The Central Government has also agreed to this. Many arguments were presented during the hearing but in the end the court allowed him to be discharged from Safdarganj. The court said that he should be shifted to Medanta. His treatment will now take place there.
What happened in the court?
During the hearing, the court asked where are the expert doctors of AIIMS? The doctor appeared. The court said to see this report. This is based on the sample taken last night. This is the report of Onquest Laboratories. The doctor said that this shows that the blood cell count is low. this is not normal. This is being seen continuously in our reports also. The court asked that if the WBC count goes above 10 thousand, is it a sign of inflammation and infection? The doctor told that if the patient’s immunity is weak, it may decrease. Hemoglobin is also low.
‘Wangchuk’s hemoglobin level very low’
The doctor said that hemoglobin level 11 is very low for a man living in Ladakh. Hemoglobin level should be higher than this. This is less according to male patients. White cell count is also low, so they are at risk of infection. The court said that show page 15 of the affidavit filed by you today. What do you say about the last paragraph? The doctor said that we agree with this (that there should be regular monitoring of him in the hospital). The court said that the doctors who are treating him and who have analyzed the samples. On the basis of this he has given this opinion.
‘Platelets are also low, they are not taking any calories’
Doctor Tandon told the court that the treatment is still going on. I am worried that his ability to fight any infection may be severely reduced. Platelets are also low. This needs investigation. They are not consuming any calories. This could be due to the breakdown of something in the liver, or their body could be exposed to an acidic environment. Increase in uric acid indicates that muscles are decreasing. Many things happen when someone fasts, but that does not mean that everything is normal. This requires constant monitoring. I support what is happening in the hospital.
What did Sonam Wangchuk’s lawyer Sibal say?
Sibal said that Sonam’s condition is stable. Monitoring can be continued. He is taking oral rehydration. Today they are on hunger strike using their rights. He has written a letter today, in which he has told what conditions he had to go through in the hospital. He says that policemen were present and he was not allowed to use the phone, and was even being monitored. The court said that considering your concerns, can he be shifted to Medanta Hospital, where he wants to go?

Sonam should be shifted to Medanta – Court
Sibal said that this can be done. Mehta said that I wanted the doctor to help the court. The court said that after seeing the reports and talking to the doctors at AIIMS and the doctor treating him, it has been agreed that there is a need for constant monitoring. According to Dr. Tandon, he will have to be kept under observation in the hospital itself. The concern expressed by Wangchuk in the letter should also be taken into consideration. Our proposal is to shift him to the hospital of his choice, Medanta.
We have no objection to shifting to Medanta – Tushar
Tushar Mehta said that I have also talked to the government. Medanta is a reputed hospital. The government has no objection if Sonam Wangchuk is shifted there, but she cannot be discharged without medical advice. Mehta said that deteriorating health can have an impact outside as well. They need medical monitoring and it is also necessary. They can be sent to Medanta, but they should not be taken out without medical advice from the doctors of Medanta. You may consider shifting them to Medanta, but the decision to shift them should be based on the medical advice of Medanta doctors and not on their own advice.
The court said that our proposal is to shift him to Medanta. He will be treated there. All the information and reports of the treatment done in Safdarjung will be handed over to Medanta. He will be treated there. The court said that the order will be issued after lunch. The court said that we thank all the doctors present for their help.
