Viral Video: Do not make this mistake while buying groceries online, explained the mathematics of online shopping with the help of a packet of chips.

July 26, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Online shopping is no longer just a convenience, but has become a part of the everyday life of millions of people. Earlier people used to order only clothes, mobile or electronic goods from the internet, but now milk, vegetables, ration and small items of daily use are also reaching home within a few minutes. Quick commerce and e-commerce companies attract customers by luring them with fast delivery, huge discounts, cashback and attractive offers. This is the reason why a large number of people prefer to order online without thinking much.

However, a video going viral on social media has started a new discussion about this entire system. In the video, a local grocery shopkeeper claimed that online shopping does not always benefit the customer. Many times, what appears cheap is actually not as affordable as it appears at first glance. The shopkeeper says that while shopping online, people often pay attention only to the price. If a good discount is seen on a product, people immediately add it to their cart. But very few people carefully look at the weight or quantity written on the packet. This is where the biggest mistake is made.

Did the video open people’s eyes?

To explain his point, the shopkeeper gave the example of a packet of chips. He told that chips of the same company come in packs of different weights. Both the packets may look almost similar, but the quantity contained inside them is different. Many times, lighter weight packets are shown at lower prices on online platforms. The customer thinks he is getting a great deal, when in reality he is paying more per gram.

In the video, he placed two packets in front of people and compared their price and weight. According to him, the packet available at his shop was more in weight, whereas the packet shown online appeared to be almost the same in size, but had less contents. For this reason, it cannot be considered right to make a decision only by looking at the price.

The shopkeeper advised people not to be happy just by seeing the discount while shopping. Always check the quantity, weight and price per gram or per kilogram written on the package. With this you will easily know which option is actually cheaper and which one is offering better value. After this video went viral, different reactions of people were seen on social media. Some people justified the shopkeeper and said that small packs are often presented as big offers on online platforms.
