Commonwealth Games 2026, Ajay Babu: Weightlifter Ajaya Babu has won silver for the country. He has won the silver medal for India in the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Ajaya Babu got this success in men’s 79 kg category. The 22-year-old weightlifter lifted a total weight of 330 kg, which included 149 kg in the snatch round and 181 kg in the clean and jerk. Ajaya Babu, who won India’s silver in Glasgow, has inherited weightlifting. Simply put, this game is in his blood.

Ajaya Babu Valuri was born on 22 November 2004 in Kondavelagada village of Vijayanagaram district of Andhra Pradesh. This is the same village from where a total of 33 weightlifters emerged, out of which 22 played nationals and 13 left their mark at the international level. By the way, the northern region of Andhra Pradesh from which he comes is also called the mine of weightlifters. Many national and international weightlifters have emerged from villages in that area like Godalam, Kondavelagada and Amadalavalasa.

Weightlifting is already prevalent in the family of Ajaya Babu Valuri. His father Valuri Srinivas Rao himself has been an international weightlifter. For the first time in 2015, Ajaya Babu was taught the first lesson of weightlifting by his father. Valuri Srinivasa Rao won the bronze medal for India in the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Ajaya Babu Valuri has transformed the bronze won by his father in the 2026 Commonwealth Games into silver.

How did Ajaya Babu’s career start?

Talking about Ajaya Babu’s career, he got a breakthrough from the Khelo India Games in 2023, where he won the gold medal with a national record in his weight category. That performance of his got him a place in the Indian team and then he started participating in international events. In 2024, he made his first big splash by winning gold medals at the junior and senior levels of the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships. In the same year he won the silver medal in the Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championship.

He gave his biggest performance in the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship held in Ahmedabad in 2025, where he created a championship record by lifting 335 kg and won the gold medal. That record-breaking win had cleared his way for the Commonwealth Games 2026, where he won the silver medal for the country.
