Tata’s problems increase due to farmers’ complaints, threat of action against iPhone plant

June 13, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Tata Electronics factory located in Hosur, Tamil Nadu has been facing serious allegations of groundwater pollution. This factory makes back panels and other important components for Apple’s iPhone. Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) has issued a notice to the company warning that if a satisfactory reply is not received, the power to the factory can be cut and it can also be closed.

The matter came to light when farmers around the factory complained that the dirty water coming out of the plant was affecting their fields and open wells. After this, the Pollution Control Board inspected five times between December 2025 and May 2026.

allegations of groundwater pollution

During investigation, officials found that the waste water coming out of the factory was being released into the rain water harvesting pond inside the complex. It is alleged that due to overflowing of the pond, this water reached the surrounding agricultural areas and affected the ground water there.

It has also been said in the notice that despite the instructions issued in December 2025, the company did not take necessary corrective steps. For this reason the board has sought clarification from the company.

Tata rejected the allegations

Tata Electronics has denied all the allegations and said that it had got the test done by a recognized independent laboratory. According to the company, the investigation report found that the factory was following all environmental and regulatory standards. The company said that it is fully committed to environmental protection and the interests of local communities and has also submitted its response to the regulatory authorities.

Factory is important for Apple’s supply chain

This plant located in Hosur is an important part of Apple’s growing manufacturing strategy in India. Tata Electronics is Apple’s second largest supplier in South Asia after Foxconn. According to research firm Counterpoint, by 2026, about 26% of the total iPhones manufactured in the world are expected to be produced in India. In such a situation, the crisis looming over this factory is considered important for both India’s electronics manufacturing sector and Apple’s supply chain.
