US President Donald Trump gave a speech in his special style at the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) dinner. In this speech of about an hour, he took a jibe at journalists, media institutions and his political opponents. During this, Trump also jokingly talked about contesting the elections for the fourth term for the post of President of America.
Trump wore a red ‘TRUMP 2028’ cap on the stage and said that he was expressing his intention to contest the elections for the fourth term. He said, tonight I express my desire to contest elections for the fourth term to save the press ratings. However, he made this statement as a joke, because according to the US Constitution, any person can serve a maximum of two terms as President.
I know the media will be harmed: Trump
While addressing the journalists, Trump said that when he steps down from the post of President, the media will face great difficulty. He said, when I am gone you all will be ruined. You will have no one to report to and your business model will collapse. He said that people do not take that much interest in others’ news, hence he is talking about a fourth term to save the rating of the press.
The program began with the speech of Weijia Jiang, the outgoing president of the White House Correspondents’ Association. He referred to the attack in April in which a gunman targeted the event. He said that this attack tested everyone and showed that it is necessary to fight for journalism and freedom of the press. This dinner program was organized again after the attack.
Awards given to journalists
Many journalists were also given awards in this program. These included some journalists whom Trump had earlier criticized. The Wall Street Journal team that reported on the case related to Trump and Jeffrey Epstein was also among the awardees.
