The government told Parliament on Friday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had raised the issue of safety of Indian sailors and maritime laborers at two places in June. The first in his meeting with US President Donald Trump, the second in the outreach session of the G7 summit held in the same month. Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh, in a written reply to a question from the Ministry of External Affairs, also said that the PM had highlighted that the ongoing conflict in West Asia has disrupted global maritime trade through the Strait of Hormuz. As a result, many people including Indian sailors have lost their lives.
The External Affairs Ministry was asked whether the issue of safety of Indian sea personnel and sailors was raised during the bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Modi and the US President on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Paris in June, following the killing of some Indian sea personnel in the US military strike in the Gulf of Oman last month.

Prime Minister Modi met US President Donald Trump on June 17 on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Evian, France. “The Prime Minister raised the issue of safety of Indian maritime workers and seafarers during his bilateral meeting with President Trump and during his intervention at the G7 Summit Outreach Session on June 16, 2026,” the MoS said.
He also stressed the importance of maintaining freedom of navigation and unimpeded commerce through the strait, Vardhan said. It was also emphasized that the safety and security of seafarers who contribute significantly to global maritime trade should remain a common concern of the international community.
What issues were discussed
The Ministry of External Affairs was also asked whether any other issues related to trade, energy security, defense cooperation etc. were discussed in the said meeting. He said, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthen the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and welcomed the progress made under the India-US Compact (Catalytic Opportunities for Military Partnership, Accelerated Commerce and Technology), including in the areas of defence, strategic technologies, energy and bilateral trade.
“They expressed satisfaction at the significant progress in negotiations towards an interim bilateral trade agreement and directed their officials to work towards the early conclusion of a balanced, mutually beneficial and commercially meaningful agreement,” he said.
