July 28, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Strong earthquake tremors were felt on Japan’s Kyushu island on Tuesday (July 28). Due to which panic spread among the people. The intensity of the earthquake has been measured at 7.1 on the Richter scale. This earthquake occurred in Kumamoto region. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the epicenter of the earthquake was 10 kilometers below sea level. After this a tsunami warning was issued.

The earthquake occurred in the western region of Kumamoto, which is about 900 kilometers south-west of Japan’s capital Tokyo. After the earthquake, the Japan Meteorological Agency has issued a tsunami warning for coastal areas. According to JMA, there is a possibility of waves up to 1 meter high in the sea.

Appeal to people to be cautious

Japan Meteorological Agency has advised people living in coastal areas to remain alert. They have been told to stay away from the sea. People have been urged to move to higher ground and follow official evacuation instructions. The US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there is no tsunami threat beyond local shores.

Alert issued at these places

The government has issued an emergency earthquake warning for Kumamoto as well as Nagasaki, Kagoshima, Fukuoka, Saga, Oita and Miyazaki prefectures. All these areas are located on Kyushu island. The administration is constantly monitoring the situation and people have been asked to follow safety instructions. At present there is no news of any loss of life or property due to this earthquake. Japanese news channel NHK reported that the earth trembled for about a minute due to the earthquake.

Earthquake also occurred on 25th June

Earlier on June 25, an earthquake of 7.2 magnitude had occurred in northern Japan but there was no loss of life or property. Japan is one of the most seismically active countries in the world. This is one of those countries where earthquakes occur the most. At least one earthquake occurs every five minutes in Japan. Due to its location on the Ring of Fire of volcanoes and oceanic trenches that partially encircles the Pacific Ocean, Japan accounts for about 20% of the world’s earthquakes of magnitude 6.0 or greater.
