Extreme Weather Alert: After nationwide testing of the emergency alert system by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), the government has now started giving alerts for thunderstorms and rains as well. An extremely severe alert issued on the mobile phones of many people warned of strong thunderstorm, rain and hailstorm during the next 3 hours. During this time the phones rang loudly. It was told in the alert that there is a possibility of lightning at some places. After this warning from the Meteorological Department, people have been advised to be alert and stay in safe places. This alert has been issued by the Meteorological Department and is being sent area wise.
What is the new SOS alert system?
This SOS alert system started by the government is an emergency alert service, through which a message is sent directly to the mobile phone in case of severe weather or other disaster. This alert is not like a normal SMS, but appears separately on the phone screen and a loud alert tone is also heard along with it. Recently, a warning message named “Extremely Severe Alert” appeared on the phones of many people, in which information was given about bad weather during the next few hours. The purpose of this technology is to provide rapid information to as many people as possible in case of danger.
Warning will be given before storm and rain
Now serious warnings from the Meteorological Department will reach people’s smartphones directly. If there is a danger of strong storm, heavy rain, hailstorm or lightning in any area, then an alert will be sent to the people present there in advance. In a recently issued message, there was a warning of lightning, strong storm and winds at a speed of 60 to 80 kilometers per hour during the next 3 hours, which could reach 90 kilometers per hour at some places. Such alerts give people extra time to reach a safe place and take necessary precautions.
How will it help in disaster management?
Mobile based wireless emergency alert system is being considered a big step towards making disaster management more effective. It is based on cell broadcast technology, through which warning messages can be sent simultaneously to all the smartphones present in an area. Earlier, warnings from the Meteorological Department were limited to TV, radio or news media, but now the information will reach directly to the affected people. With this, people will be able to be alert before incidents like storm, rain, flood, earthquake and lightning. Not only this, the government will also be able to use this system in times of war, terrorist threat and other national emergencies. Due to the wide reach of smartphones, it is being considered the most effective medium to deliver information to people quickly.
