Solar on the roof, free electricity at home! Benefits of PM Surya Ghar Yojana will reach 50 lakh families

The Central Government’s ‘PM Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme’ is progressing rapidly. The government has announced that this scheme will soon cross the figure of 50 lakh beneficiary families. This information was given by Union New and Renewable Energy Minister Prahlad Joshi during the curtain raiser program of India Renewable Energy Summit (BRE Summit) 2026.

The government says that the objective of PM Surya Ghar Yojana is to install rooftop solar systems on the roofs of more and more houses in the country, so that people can generate their own electricity and electricity costs can be reduced. Under this scheme, subsidy is also given by the government to the eligible families for installing solar panels.

Important meeting held on PM Surya Ghar 2.0

The brainstorming meeting on PM Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme 2.0 was held at Atal Akshay Urja Bhawan. This meeting was presided over by JVN Subramaniam, Joint Secretary, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. International Solar Alliance (ISA) Director General Ashish Khanna, energy sector experts, industry representatives, solar equipment manufacturing companies, discoms and officials of many major institutions participated in the meeting. During this, there was discussion on further improving the scheme, increasing its reach to the people and simplifying the process of installing solar system. The government’s aim is that more and more families can take advantage of this scheme.

Preparation to reach 50 lakh families

At the curtain raiser event of BRE Summit 2026, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi said that India’s clean energy journey is progressing rapidly and PM Surya Ghar Yojana will soon reach 50 lakh beneficiary families. He said that India is working towards becoming self-reliant in the energy sector. Now the country is not limited to just meeting its needs, but is emerging as a strong model of clean energy for the whole world. He also informed that India Renewable Energy Summit and Expo 2026 will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This event will be held from 2 to 5 November 2026 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi.

Every house will become electricity producer

Union Minister of State Shripad Yesso Naik said that the biggest feature of PM Surya Ghar Yojana is that now common people will not just be consumers of electricity, but will also become electricity producers. He said that rooftop solar will increase employment in rural areas, improve people’s income and promote clean energy. This will help in environmental protection as well as in meeting the energy needs of the country.

What happened in the summit?

The official logo of the summit was launched at the curtain raiser event of BRE Summit 2026. With this, the energy cycle started, which is a symbol of India’s clean energy campaign. The government also launched the official website and mobile app for the summit, through which people will be able to easily access registration, programs and other information.
