Devotees reach the temple early in the morning and perform Jalabhishek of Lord Shiva and observe fast on Sawan Monday. The festival of Hariyali Teej in Sawan is also celebrated with great enthusiasm in Uttar Pradesh. Women dress up, swing and sing folk songs of Sawan. In this way, along with devotion to Shiva, special colors of folk culture and women’s festivals can also be seen here in Saavan.
Kanwar Yatra and splendor of Shiv Dhams in Uttarakhand
Uttarakhand is called Devbhoomi and the number of devotees at the pilgrimage sites associated with Lord Shiva increases significantly during Sawan. A large number of devotees reach Haridwar, Rishikesh and Neelkanth Mahadev Temple during Sawan. Kanwariyas take Ganga water from Haridwar and leave for their respective destinations. Many devotees complete a long journey on foot and offer Ganga water to the Shiva temple of their area. During this period, camps are set up at various places on the way to serve the Kanwariyas.

Special significance of Baba Mahakal’s ride in Madhya Pradesh
In Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, the month of Sawan is very special for the devotion of Lord Mahakal. Mahakaleshwar Jyotirling located here is included among the 12 Jyotirlingas of the country. During Sawan, a huge crowd of devotees gather in the temple. There is a tradition of taking out the ride of Lord Mahakal during Sawan and Bhadrapada. During this time, Baba Mahakal goes on a tour of the city and devotees gather in large numbers to have his darshan.
Worship of Mangala Gauri with Sawan Monday in Maharashtra
In Maharashtra, there is a special tradition of worshiping Goddess Parvati along with worshiping Lord Shiva during Sawan. Here the number of women observing fast on Sawan Monday is very high. Mangala Gauri Vrat also holds special significance among married women. During this time, women worship Goddess Gauri and pray for the long life of their husbands, happy married life and prosperity of the family.
In Rajasthan, Saavan means greenery and celebration of Teej.
As soon as Sawan arrives in Rajasthan, one can see the splendor of greenery amidst the hot weather. The festival of Teej is celebrated with special enthusiasm in this month. Women dress up in traditional clothes and apply henna on their hands. Swings are set up at many places and women swing while singing folk songs of Sawan.
Different traditions of Shravan month in Karnataka
In Karnataka, Saavan is commonly known as Shravan month. Like North India, here mainly not only Lord Shiva is worshipped, but also Mata Lakshmi, Mata Gauri, Lord Vishnu and Nag Devta. Here, Varamahalakshmi fast is also considered to have special significance during the month of Shravan. On this occasion, women worship Goddess Lakshmi and pray for the well-being of the family. In this way, the color of Shravan in South India looks somewhat different from that of Shravan in North India. The festival of Nag Panchami, which falls in the early days of Sawan, is celebrated on a large scale in Karnataka, with women and children visiting clay idols of the snake deity or visiting nearby temples and offering milk, turmeric and flowers on the stone snake idols.
