There are torrential rains in many districts of Jammu and Kashmir due to which the situation has become very bad. Rain has caused huge devastation in Poonch and Rajouri districts. In many areas, water has entered inside people’s homes. The vehicles have been washed away in the flood. Due to this sky-high conflict, people are facing huge problems. At least 14 people died in the flash floods and landslides in the Pir Panjal region, while many people are reported missing.
Many houses got hit by the strong current of water, rocks and debris coming down from the mountains. Officials said that more people may be trapped under the debris, hence the death toll may increase. He said that people are being searched.
CM took stock of relief works
In view of the situation, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah ended his Delhi tour midway and left for Jammu to take stock of the relief work after the devastation caused in the border districts due to heavy rains. Police, Army, SDRF, civil administration and local volunteers have been deployed in the most affected Surankote, Haveli and Mandi areas of Poonch. During this time people are being helped. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha also reviewed the relief work by holding a meeting with the officials and directed to provide immediate help to the affected families.
Traffic disrupted on Jammu-Srinagar NH-44
Heavy rains disrupted traffic on Jammu-Srinagar NH-44, prompting officials to urge commuters to avoid risky routes. The Amarnath Yatra, which began on July 3, and the pilgrimages to Vaishno Devi Temple in Katra and Shiv Khori in Reasi have been temporarily postponed following the prediction of adverse weather for the next three days.
8 members of the same family died
Officials said that the rain caused the maximum damage in Lower Murra of Surankote, where 8 members of the same family were washed away in the strong current of water. According to officials, 3 bodies were recovered by the evening, while the search for 6 others is ongoing. The deceased include 59-year-old Noor Safia, her 16-year-old son Sajjad Ahmed, 10-year-old Haqnawaz Ahmed and Shahnawaz Ahmed. Apart from this, 25 year old Khaleda Kausar and her 2 year old son Sofiaan, 60 year old Bano Bi and 7 year old Mohammad Akram have also died.
Four died in Sangla village
Four deaths have been reported in Sangla village, while one person has also lost his life in nearby Sanglani. 28 year old Nazia Kausar has died in Nuna Bandi area. Four people injured in the accident have been admitted to Poonch District Hospital for treatment. LG Sinha said that he has spoken to senior officials and reviewed the rescue operations. He said that the affected families have been shifted to safe places and all departments are on high alert. He further said that I am deeply saddened by the loss of life and property in Rajouri and Poonch. Sinha urged people to follow official updates.
CM expressed grief over the accident
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed grief over the dead and expressed condolences to the bereaved families and also wished for the speedy recovery of the injured. Former Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad also expressed grief over the loss of life and widespread destruction.
Chenab river water level increased
Due to continuous rains in Jammu and Kashmir since last night, the water level of Chenab river in Reasi district has increased significantly and river water has started flowing in many low-lying areas. Incessant rains across the region and in the upper catchment areas have increased the flow of water in the river and its associated streams, causing concern to people living on the banks of the river and in the downstream areas. People have been advised to be cautious, avoid going near the river and stay away from swollen streams and other risky places.
