President Draupadi Murmu has accepted the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Union Minister Prahlad Joshi has been given additional responsibility of the Education Ministry. A statement issued by Rashtrapati Bhavan said that the President of India, on the advice of the Prime Minister, has accepted Pradhan’s resignation from the Union Council of Ministers with immediate effect, under Clause (2) of Article 75 of the Constitution of India.

Dharmendra Pradhan had resigned today

Dharmendra Pradhan on Saturday announced his resignation from the post of Union Education Minister, saying the decision has been taken due to the need to protect the future of students and prevent “anti-national forces” from taking advantage of the massive protests by youth at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar.

Pradhan’s resignation is a rare example of a senior minister in the Narendra Modi government stepping down amid sustained street protests and political pressure.

Government bowed down after CJP’s performance

This resignation came hours before the third round of talks between the Center and the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP). Before the meeting, CJP leaders had said that Pradhan’s resignation was “non-negotiable” and made it the main demand of the protest movement.

After Joshi’s appointment, Cockroach Janata Party chief spokesperson Saurav Das warned the new education minister. “The youth have warned that whoever becomes the Union Education Minister, if their issues are not addressed, they will come back to Jantar Mantar and demand accountability from the government,” Das said.
