
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday spoke to the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. PM Modi expressed condolences on the demise of Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, father and father of the Emir of Qatar. Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on social site X that he remembered his deep affection for India, his love for the Indian community in Qatar and his commitment to India-Qatar relations. Earlier, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi Qatar paid tribute to the former emir on his death, calling him “a forward-thinking leader who took Qatar to higher levels of development and prosperity” and “a true friend”.

The Prime Minister also recalled the important role of Father Amir in strengthening the India-Qatar strategic partnership and recalled his conversation with him during his visit to Qatar in February 2024.
India had announced national mourning
Showing India’s deep respect for the departed leader, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had declared 13 July 2026 as a day of national mourning. The national flag was flown at half mast on all government buildings across India.
Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, widely considered the architect of modern Qatar, led the country from 1995 to 2013, after which he voluntarily handed over power to Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. His visionary reforms made Qatar one of the world’s leading economies and enhanced its diplomatic status around the world.
Rijiju visited Qatar
Earlier, India’s Parliamentary and Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju had visited Doha to express condolences on behalf of the Government of India and the people of India on the demise of former Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. He emphasized on the deep and strong friendship between India and Qatar.
During his visit, the minister on Tuesday met Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and expressed India’s heartfelt condolences on the demise of Father Amir. Rijiju had also given his personal greetings to the Amir on behalf of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
