Parents are 15 years older, children are less than 9 months apart… 19 lakh votes will be lost in Uttarakhand due to these 5 reasons

July 16, 2026 by Uma Shankar

If there is a difference of only 15 years in the age of a son and his father in the voter list, if there is a difference of less than 9 months between two children of the same family or there is a difference of only 40 years in the age of grandparents and grandchildren, then it is natural to raise questions. Thousands of such shocking discrepancies have come to light in the first phase of Special Intensive Review (SIR) of the Election Commission in Uttarakhand. Mistakes related to age, family relationship, name, mapping and identity have been found in a total of 19.04 lakh records across the state. The investigation has also revealed a large number of dead voters, people who have shifted to other places, names registered at more than one place and voters who were not found during verification. Now field verification of all these records will be done and names of voters found ineligible can be removed from the voter list. After all, what are the five major reasons due to which such a large number of records came under scrutiny, let us understand in detail.

Age figures surprised the most

In the first phase of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the Election Commission, 19.04 lakh discrepancies have come to light in the voter list of Uttarakhand. The most shocking matter among these is related to age. 1,99,121 such voters were found in the state whose age is recorded to be just 15 years or less than that of their parents. In the records of 1,09,547 voters, a difference of more than 50 years was found between parents and children. 43,418 such cases were reported in Haridwar, 38,818 in Udham Singh Nagar and 28,637 in Dehradun. The Election Commission will now do field verification of all these records.

5 big points

  1. Mistakes in 19.04 lakh records: In the first phase of SIR, major irregularities related to age, name, family and mapping were found.
  2. Age statistics startling: In 1,99,121 voters, the age difference between the parents was 15 years or less, while in 92,114 cases the age difference was less than 40 years from the grandparents.
  3. Disturbances in family records: In 2,39,566 cases, there was a gap of less than 9 months between two children and in many families, more than 6 voters were found belonging to the same head.
  4. Mistakes in naming and mapping: Mistakes were found in the names of thousands of voters, details of relatives and mapping from the 2003 voter list.
  5. Now field verification will happen: After verification, names of voters with ineligible, duplicate, dead or incorrect records can be removed from the list.

Age difference is less than that of grandparents, family records also surprised

Major discrepancies have been found not only in the voter list, but also in the records related to grandparents. Across Uttarakhand, the age of 92,114 voters was found to be less than 40 years of their grandparents. Maximum 21,036 cases were found in Udham Singh Nagar, 14,071 in Haridwar, 13,527 in Dehradun and 11,875 in Nainital. According to the Commission, these figures revealed on such a large scale show the need to re-examine family details and age related records.

Question on 19 lakh records

Age difference of less than 9 months in same family, thousands of records under investigation

During SIR, 2,39,566 such voters were also found whose records show that the age difference between two children in the same family is less than nine months. Maximum 6,457 cases were found in Khanpur and 6,187 in Haridwar Rural Assembly constituency, while 3,236 such records were found in Vikasnagar. Apart from this, thousands of cases were also found where 6 or more voters were related to the head of the same family. 8,087 such records were recorded in Peeran Kaliyar, 6,964 in Mangalore and 4,799 in Laksar.

Millions of errors in names, relatives and mapping

A large number of mistakes have been found in the voter list, not only in age but also in name and family details. Most records were found affected in Dehradun and Haridwar. In Raipur assembly constituency, discrepancies were found in the names of 23,555 voters and in the names of relatives in 17,676 records. Such mistakes were also found in 20,805 records in Doiwala and 23,048 records in Dharampur. Apart from this, thousands of voters were found in “not mapped” category. Maximum 42,808 such cases were registered in Rudrapur.

19.04 lakh records will be examined, names may be deleted after notice

According to the Election Commission, in the first phase of SIR, a total of 19.04 lakh records have been found with some kind of discrepancy across the state. These include irregularities like age difference, name mistake, wrong mapping of family, unusual number of voters joining one family and not mapped records. Now there will be field verification of all these cases. The names of voters whose verification is not possible even after the issue of notice can be removed from the voter list.

What is the purpose of SIR, what will happen next?

The Election Commission says that the purpose of Special Intensive Revision is to completely purify and update the voter list. Under the campaign, cases that are dead, transferred, registered at two places and have serious mistakes in the records are being identified. The Commission has clarified that after field verification, eligible voters will get an opportunity to correct their records and lodge claims and objections. Only after this the final voter list will be prepared. The purpose of this entire process is to make the voter list more accurate and reliable.
