Along with the monsoon session of Parliament, the monsoon session of Madhya Pradesh Assembly is also starting from Monday. In this session, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will introduce the ‘Uniform Civil Code’ (UCC) Bill, while the main opposition Congress is planning to corner the government over the alleged “land scam” involving Chief Minister Mohan Yadav.
A day before the session, the Yadav cabinet approved the draft UCC bill as well as proposed laws related to amendments in the labor code, civil defence, ‘ease of doing business’ and private university laws.
Politics intensifies regarding UCC law
However, politics has intensified regarding the proposed UCC law in the state. Appealing to support this proposed law, CM Yadav requested all political parties to rise above party politics on issues of public interest. This session of MP will run from 20th July to 24th July.
The state cabinet approved the draft of the ‘Uniform Civil Code’ bill yesterday on Sunday. This paves the way for a common civil law that criminalises triple talaq and ‘Nikah Halala’, and also bans polygamy. Apart from this, it proposes a punishment of 3 months if the live-in relationship is not registered within one month.
5 day session, issues related to public
Assembly Speaker Narendra Singh Tomar took stock of the preparations for the MONUS session and expressed hope that there will be meaningful debates on issues related to public welfare. He also instructed the officials to run the proceedings of the House smoothly.
In this 5-day session in Madhya Pradesh, supplementary budget, legislative work and other proposals of the government are also likely to be discussed. Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition in the House Umang Singhar said that the opposition will raise many issues related to the public during the session.
Opposition preparing to corner the government
Umang Singhar said that Congress has made a strategy to corner the government on the alleged land scam related to the Chief Minister and his family, examination paper leak, reforms in recruitment examinations, issues related to Ken-Betwa Link Project and other alleged scams and corruption cases.
He also said the party will also raise farmers’ issues, demand an annual job calendar to ensure transparency in government recruitment, question the proposed UCC, and raise issues related to the rights of tribals and Dalits and crimes against women.
Opposition will come with facts and evidence
Singhar said that the opposition will try to present its allegations with facts and evidence, and will also demand accountability from the government. Apart from this, he also said that the Congress Legislature Party will remain united.
Many important issues to be raised by Congress in the Assembly have been decided. The most important case is the alleged land scam related to the Chief Minister and his family. After this, there is the matter related to the problems of farmers and agricultural crisis. Apart from the demand of releasing annual job calendar for government jobs, employment of youth and transparency in recruitment examinations, comprehensive system reforms in the recruitment process will be demanded.
Along with this, there will be a demand to fix accountability from the government on the stand of the government on Uniform Civil Code, issues related to the rights of tribals and Dalits, increasing atrocities on women and improvement in security, education and health system as well as Ken-Betwa project, scams and corruption cases in the state.
