Liam Dawson: The reason why I retired 2 months ago, now I have done the same feat, played a historic innings

July 14, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Liam Dawson Maiden Odi Fifty: At one time, the host England team was in deep trouble in the first ODI match against India at the Edgbaston ground in Birmingham. In front of India’s lethal bowling, England had lost 6 important wickets on the score of just 107 runs. At such a critical juncture, experienced all-rounder Liam Dawson stepped onto the crease and played a memorable innings which not only helped England but also created a big record in the pages of history.

10 years wait is over

Amidst the team’s poor batting, Liam Dawson supported senior batsman Joe Root very well as soon as he came on the field. He faced the Indian bowlers bravely and batted intelligently and completed his half-century in just 65 balls. This is the first half-century of Dawson’s ODI international career. To reach this half-century, Dawson had to wait for 10 long years. He made his ODI debut for England in the year 2016. However, he did not get many opportunities in this format and this match against India is only the 10th match of his ODI career. Now this innings played in his 10th match has become the biggest innings of his career.

The decision to leave first-class cricket proved correct

Interestingly, on May 13 this year, Liam Dawson surprised everyone by suddenly announcing his retirement from first-class cricket. He then explained the reason for this decision and said that he wants to prolong his white-ball career and concentrate completely on limited overs cricket. This excellent innings played in this match against India proves that his big decision was absolutely correct strategically.

Created a historic record with Joe Root

When the team was struggling after losing 6 wickets for 107 runs, Liam Dawson and Joe Root together took charge. Both of them made a century partnership of 121 runs for the 7th wicket. This is the record of the biggest partnership ever made by England against India for the 7th or lower wicket in the history of ODI cricket. Thanks to this historic partnership, the England team has been successful in reaching a respectable score in the match.
