Bahuda Yatra 2026: This year, on 16th July, on the second day of Shukla Paksha of Ashadh month, the holy festival of Rath Yatra started in the temple of Jagannath at Puri in Odisha. In this, Lord Jagannath along with his elder brother Balabhadra and Subhadra Devi went to his aunt’s house Gundicha Devi temple in chariots. Now is the time for Jagannath ji to return to the temple. The Lord returns to the temple through Bahuda Yatra.
Today is the day of many journeys. Bhagavan is going to return to Shrimandir today. This journey is called Bahuda Yatra. This marks the return of God to his home on the tenth day of Shukla Paksha of Ashadh month. In Oriya culture it is called ‘Bahuda Yatra’. During the return of the Lord i.e. during this Bahuda Yatra, many rituals are performed and then Mahaprabhu sits at his place in the temple. Let us know what happens in this journey?
offerings will be made to the Lord
Mahaprabhu will ride on his chariot to return to the temple, but before that he will be offered the famous traditional dish ‘Poda Pitha’ (a special traditional pancake made of rice, coconut and jaggery). Then we will start the return journey from Gundicha temple to Lord Jagannath temple. After reaching Shri Jagannath temple, the ritual of ‘Suna Besh’ will be performed. This ritual takes place on Ashadh Shukla Ekadashi.
‘Suna Besh’ ritual
In this, Mahaprabhu Jagannath is adorned royally with a gold crown, necklace, girdle and gold hands and feet. Lord Jaganna is adorned with lots of gold ornaments. This is called wearing ‘Suna Besh’ or ‘Rajarajeshwar Besh’ of God. Then Lord Jagannath appears to his devotees sitting in a chariot in front of the Singhdwar of the Jagannath temple.
rite of passage
After this, another important ritual of Lord Jagannath is performed on the chariots itself. This is called Adhar Pana or Adhar Pana. This ritual takes place on the chariot itself on the next day of ‘Suna Besh’. In this, a very tasty and fragrant drink (sharbat) made of milk, chhena, sugar, banana and dry fruits is filled in big earthen pots and brought to the lips of the Lord. Then the pots are broken.
Jagannath Prabhu will celebrate Mother Lakshmi
It is believed that this Prasad is for invisible spirits, Chandi-Chamunda and Parsva Gods and Goddesses. The common devotee does not accept this. After this, with the ritual of Niladri Bije, Mahaprabhu again sits in his sanctum sanctorum in the temple of Jagannath. This ritual is performed on Ashadh Shukla Trayodashi. In this, God celebrates his wife Mata Lakshmi by feeding her Rasgulla.
Since Lord Jagannath stays out of the temple for nine days and goes to his aunt’s house, Goddess Lakshmi gets angry. After convincing the mother, God again sits at his place.
