Finance Minister’s emphasis on speeding up the refund process

Only last week the 167th Income Tax Day was organized. This event was also important because it was the first Income Tax Day after the implementation of ‘Income Tax Act, 2025′. In this program, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman praised the record number of ITR filings. He has given clear instructions to the Income Tax Department that the refund process should be expedited. Receiving refunds quickly strengthens taxpayers’ confidence in the system and also makes it easier for them to follow tax-related rules. Referring to responsive tax governance based on the principle of ‘5R’, the Finance Minister said that now the responsibility of the department is not only to collect revenue, but its main goal is to bring fairness in the system, increase ease of doing business and provide citizen-centric services.

Increased capacity of new portal, 1.6 crore interactions in a day

This time the tax filing experience has become much better and easier than before. The Income Tax Department has significantly increased the computing capacity and bandwidth of the e-filing portal. The result of this upgrade is that the portal is now easily handling the traffic of more than one crore taxpayers in a day without any stoppage. At peak times this figure had reached 16 million interactions. If we look at the figures, till July 21, 3.2 crore returns had been filed. Of these, 94 percent returns had been successfully verified, while 60 percent returns had also been processed. This simply means that the work of the common man is no longer getting stuck unnecessarily.

Taxpayers’ complaints are being resolved soon

There has been a big change in the attitude of the Income Tax Department towards the problems and complaints of taxpayers. Of the approximately 78,000 complaints received on the Centralized Public Grievance Redress and Monitoring System (CPGRAMS) during the financial year 2025-26, 94 percent have been resolved. Whereas earlier it used to take an average of 57 days to resolve a complaint, now this time has come down to just 28 days. Nearly two-thirds of the complaints were resolved within just three weeks. Apart from this, the performance of e-redressal platform has also improved. Here, out of about 3.5 lakh complaints, 95 percent have been resolved, where the average resolution time has also come down to 42 days.
