Indian Coast Guard has got great success under the Self-reliant India campaign. The first Factory Acceptance Trial (FAT) of the Indian made Marine Waterjet System has been successfully completed in Goa. This trial was completed in the presence of Coast Guard, Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) and other technical experts. This waterjet system is now being manufactured in India by taking technology from a Swedish company. Earlier this system was imported from abroad.
For the first time, these waterjet systems made in India will be installed in 14 new Fast Patrol Vessels (FPVs) being built for the Indian Coast Guard. This achievement will promote indigenous manufacturing in the defense sector, reduce dependence on foreign countries and maintenance of Indian Coast Guard ships will also be easier and cheaper. Besides, the operational capability of the coast guard ships to be built in the future will also be strengthened.
Indian Coast Guard Director General Parmesh Shivmani had inaugurated the Waterjet Production and Testing Facility of M/s Marine Jet Power India in Goa on 13 February 2026 and described it as an important achievement of India towards maritime self-reliance. With the establishment of such an advanced production and testing facility, India has become the third country after the US and South Korea to host such a facility globally.
What is Waterjet Production and Testing Facility?
Waterjet Production and Testing Facility is a specialized industrial and testing center where waterjet propulsion systems are manufactured, assembled, tested and quality checked. This facility is mainly developed for naval warships, high speed boats, coast guard ships and other maritime platforms.
What is waterjet propulsion system?
Waterjet propulsion is a technology in which water is sucked in and expelled backward at a very high speed through a pump installed at the bottom of the ship. The ship moves forward due to this reaction force. It does not require a traditional propeller. Talking about its benefits, it increases the speed of the ship and the ship can move easily even in shallow water.
