Big step towards educational reform, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind said on Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation

July 25, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Vice President of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind Prof. Salim Engineer has welcomed the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. He said that after the irregularities in the examination and the NEET paper leak controversy, such a step towards accountability should have been taken long ago. He said that even though it is late, it acknowledges the seriousness of the public concerns raised by students across the country.

In a statement issued to the media, Professor Salim Engineer said, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind welcomes the resignation of the Union Education Minister. Given the recurring controversies surrounding the country’s examination system, this step should have been taken long ago. Nevertheless, this is an important start towards establishing accountability and restoring public trust in our educational institutions.

Congratulations to thousands of youth across the country

Salim said that we congratulate ‘Gen Z’, student organizations and the thousands of youth across the country who participated in peaceful protests demanding accountability. The determination, patience and democratic spirit shown by the youth of the country in the last few weeks is worthy of praise. Their peaceful and sustained movement has proved that the youth are fully committed to protecting the integrity of the Indian education system and securing the future of millions of students.

Government should make meaningful reforms

Professor Salim Engineer further said, however, the resignation of just one person cannot solve the deep structural problems of the education sector. The crisis in our education system requires comprehensive change rather than mere cosmetic measures. The government must now undertake meaningful reforms that restore the credibility of public examinations, strengthen institutional transparency and accountability, and ensure that such failures never happen again.

Academics, educationists, researchers, teachers and other experts should be actively involved in this process, so that sustainable reforms are based on professional knowledge and broad public consultation. The Vice President of Jamaat said, the reports of excessive use of force against peaceful protesters in Delhi and Bihar during the movement are equally worrying.

Lathi-charge, use of pellet guns

Reports of police brutality such as lathi-charge, use of pellet guns, firing tear gas shells at close range and illegal detention of peaceful protesters are worrying and need an impartial investigation. Appropriate disciplinary action should be taken as per law against any policeman found responsible for using excessive force. We appeal to students and citizens to remain committed to the broader objective of educational reform.

Trust in education system completely restored

This movement should continue peacefully until meaningful reforms are implemented and confidence in the education system is completely restored. India should have an education system that is affordable, accessible and transparent, based on honesty and ensuring equal opportunities for every student.
