Rowing World Cup: Won gold medal for the first time, doping took that away, India’s historic success tainted

July 25, 2026 by Uma Shankar

In cricket-crazy India, success in other sports is rarely seen. Especially in such sports, whose existence most of the country’s population is unaware of, participation in them seems like a big achievement in itself. If India gets a gold medal in such a game, it becomes history. Something similar happened recently, when India won the World Cup gold medal in rowing for the first time. But the disease of doping took away this historic medal from the country.

In the Rowing World Cup held in June 2026, India won the gold medal in lightweight men’s doubles sculls. For the first time in this game, India won the gold medal. But this achievement and happiness of the country could not last even for a month because a player who won the gold was caught in doping. Lakshya, one of the two members of the rowing team, has been found positive in the dope test, due to which he has been temporarily suspended.

Positive in dope test, will snatch gold medal

According to a report, an old sample of Lakshya, a member of the rowing team that won gold in the World Cup held in Switzerland at the end of June, has come positive. This sample was taken on May 25, a month before the competition. After testing, Lakshya’s sample was found to contain Stanozolol, which is a banned performance enhancing substance.

Due to this, not only has a provisional suspension been imposed on him, but all his records after the samples were taken have been deleted. Due to this, the World Cup performance will also be declared canceled and the historic gold medal will be snatched from India’s share. Ujjwal Kumar Singh was also in this doubles sculls team along with Lakshya.

Such a long ban may be imposed

Lakshya has now been issued a notice to appear by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA). He will have to prove his innocence before the agency and if he fails in this, he will be banned for 4 years. This incident has once again tainted Indian sports. Recently, three players from different sports selected for the Commonwealth Games were dropped from the Indian team due to being caught in doping cases.
