Slavko Vincic, FIFA World Cup Final: Just before the title match of the Football World Cup, FIFA has taken a decision which has surprised the sports world. Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic has been appointed as the main referee for the great match between Spain and Argentina at the MetLife Stadium on Sunday. This decision is in the news because about six years ago Vincic was arrested by the police during a raid on a sex party in connection with the drugs and prostitution racket.

In this high-profile match, Slavko Vincic along with his compatriots Tomasz Klencnik and Andrej Kovacic will play the role of assistant referees. At the same time, Adham Makhadmeh of Jordan will be the fourth officer. On the other hand, Argentina captain Lionel Messi will take the field with the intention of winning his second consecutive World Cup title amid allegations of bias against the officials during this tournament.
What was that whole controversy of the year 2020?
This entire matter dates back to May 2020, when the police detained Slavko Vincic during a secret raid in Bijeljina city of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Police suspected that the party was being organized by Tijana Maksimovic, the leader of a prostitution racket, who later confessed to promoting prostitution at the international level the following year.
During that raid, the police had arrested 26 men and 9 women. Also, huge quantities of cocaine packets, 10 pistols, 3 protective jackets and more than 10,000 Euros in cash were recovered from the spot. However, Slavko Vincic was not accused of being directly involved in the racket and the police released him after questioning him only as a witness. Speaking to Slovenian media after this incident, Vincic had said in his defense that he did not know that group at all. Vlado Sajan, president of the Football Referees Association of Slovenia, also defended his referee, saying that Vincic was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Slavko Vincic is an experienced referee, who also officiated in the Champions League final played between Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund in the year 2024. He has a long history with the Argentinian team. He officiated in only one match for Argentina in the 2022 World Cup, where Messi’s team had to face a shocking defeat at the hands of Saudi Arabia. In this current summer season too, he has officiated in three big matches: Mexico’s win over Ecuador, the draw between Brazil and Morocco, and Algeria’s win against Jordan.
