Treatment up to 91% cheaper than America, 5 lakh patients came from outside… How is India becoming a hub of medical tourism?

July 27, 2026 by Uma Shankar

Today, India has made its mark as the fastest growing medical tourism destination in the world. The reason is simple, compared to developed countries like America and Britain, treatment here is 80 to 90 percent cheaper, while the quality of treatment and expertise of doctors is no less than anyone. This is the reason that in 2025, about 5 lakh foreign patients will reach India for treatment and by 2030 this figure is estimated to reach ₹ 1.56 lakh crore in terms of market. The figures tell the story of this change themselves. While only 1.12 lakh foreign patients came to India in 2009, this number is expected to increase to 5.07 lakh in 2025. This means that in 16 years the number of foreign patients has increased by about 4.5 times. India is now counted among the major centers of the world for complex and expensive medical services like cardiac surgery, orthopedic treatment, oncology, neurology and organ transplant.

The effect of this increasing confidence is also clearly visible on the size of the market. India’s medical tourism market is estimated to be around Rs 84 thousand crore in 2025, which is expected to increase to Rs 1.56 lakh crore by 2030. If seen at the global level, the worldwide medical tourism market in 2022 was worth around Rs 11.16 lakh crore. At the same time, by 2030 it can reach Rs 27.62 lakh crore. This means that India’s share in this entire global expansion is also continuously getting stronger.

Medical Tourism

Treatment is so much cheaper than America

The claim that treatment is cheaper in India is proved not only in words but also in statistics. According to Grand View Research’s 2026 Medical Tourism Market Report, knee replacement surgery in India costs an average of Rs 6.76 lakh. Whereas in America, the same treatment costs up to Rs 77.3 lakh, which means a saving of about 91 percent. Heart bypass surgery is possible in India for Rs 7.7 lakh, whereas in America it costs up to Rs 38.6 lakh, i.e. 88 percent cheaper. In hip replacement surgery, the saving figure goes up to 95 percent. In India it is available for just Rs 48 thousand, whereas in America its price goes up to Rs 5.8 lakh. Even in the case of spine surgery, it costs Rs 2.9 lakh in India and Rs 14.5 lakh in America, which means foreigners will save 87 percent by getting its treatment done in India.

E-Medical Visa for 172 countries

Not only cheap treatment, India has also made the visa process very easy for foreign patients. The government has started the facility of e-medical visa for citizens of 172 countries, the fee of which is only between Rs 1,000 to 2,000. This visa remains valid for 16 to 60 days and if needed, it can be extended by paying an additional fee of just Rs 3,000. Apart from this, the government has also started a separate AYUSH visa category for foreign citizens coming for treatment through traditional Indian medical systems Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani and Homeopathy. Due to this initiative, the number of patients coming to India every month is continuously increasing and India is establishing itself as a center of not only modern medicine but also traditional health tourism.

Cost Of Medical In India

69 thousand hospitals, 66% beds with private sector

India’s strong healthcare infrastructure has also played a big role in this change. At present there are a total of 69,364 hospitals in the country, out of which 25,778 hospitals are in the private sector. Overall, there are about 12 lakh hospital beds in the country, out of which 1.299 lakh beds are in private hospitals only. Private hospitals provide treatment to patients with better facilities, advanced technology and less waiting time, due to which they are becoming the first choice among foreign patients.

New choice for patients who want to avoid long waiting

In countries like Britain, under government health care, patients sometimes have to wait for months for complex surgeries. In such a situation, specialist doctors, modern hospitals and treatment available without much waiting in India are increasingly attracting patients. This combination of low cost and prompt treatment is making India a reliable option for patients around the world.

India also becomes the new base for longevity medicine

Apart from traditional areas of treatment, India is also becoming a new center for treatments related to longevity medicine and healthy ageing. Modern technologies like genetic testing, anti-aging therapy and stem cell treatment are used in this. Due to foreign patients being able to get advanced treatment here at relatively low cost, the demand for this area is also continuously increasing. Overall, affordable medical services, easy visa policy, strong healthcare infrastructure and availability of specialist doctors have combined to turn India into the fastest growing medical tourism hub in the world. In the coming years, this sector will not only strengthen India’s economy but will also strengthen the country’s global healthcare image.
