If you open social media, there is a cry of salary in every second post. Some people are finding the package less, some’s boss is not giving increment. But this time the story is completely opposite. A post is going viral on Reddit, where a boy is worried about his high salary. Yes, you read it right. He is feeling guilty even after getting a higher salary. This is the case of r/IndianWorkplace, where people often share office politics, boss’s actions and job-related stories. Here a newly minted marketing executive opened up his heart.
This boy told that after struggling in internship for 2 years, he has finally got his first full-time job in a startup. The role is of marketing executive. And salary? Rs 43,000 in-hand, every month in the bank. Obviously, this is a very good start for a first job, but his happiness did not last long. In the very first few days of office, he faced a reality which gave him sleepless nights.
Why did the guy lose his senses?
On the same day, another person had also joined him in the sales department. During the conversation it was revealed that the man had 12 years of strong experience. He has worked in big retail brands like Reliance, Vijay Sales and Croma. Meaning, he is a market player. He has just changed his sector and has come into this startup. Even after 12 years of experience, the in-hand salary of that sales guy is only Rs 31,000, that too without any incentive and from here the gilt chapter of this new guy begins.
He started thinking – Friend, I am a fresher, I have only internship experience and I am getting Rs 43 thousand. The guy in front of me has been working in this field for 12 years, yet he is getting Rs 12,000 less than me. Is this correct? He further told that during such talks, he came to know that the salary of the office boy in the office is Rs 15,000. Now he became completely confused.
What did people say?
He started wondering whether the company was taking advantage of old and experienced people? Are they being made to do more work by paying less money? He clearly wrote in the post that he is new, he does not know much about the intricacies of this industry, but taking more money from a person much more senior than him is eating him from within. As soon as he posted this post, there was a flood of comments. And most of the people explained the same thing to him – Brother, stop feeling guilty, this is corporate.
A user wrote a very simple thing that see brother, the value of every role is different. Sales and marketing are two different things. Maybe the company needs your skillset more. Maybe there is too much expectation from them that you will make the company grow. Others said that this happens a lot in startups. You are not getting 43 thousand because you are a fresher, but because you will be made to work without considering the time. There is no 9-to-5 in marketing. You may have to post a post even at 11 pm, you may have to watch the campaign even on Sunday. The work of sales remains fixed, but not of marketing. If we look closely, this story tells us that in the corporate world, salary is not decided only by counting the years of experience. Role, skills, demand and company’s requirement, all together decide your value.
