Tension increases in Iran, India issues travel advisory, citizens advised to leave the country

July 20, 2026 by Uma Shankar

India on Sunday advised its citizens to postpone traveling to Iran until the security situation improves. Also, amid the increasing instability and conflict, those already present there were asked to consider leaving through available commercial flights. The Indian Embassy in Tehran said in a new travel advisory that instability and conflict have increased in Iran in recent times, therefore Indian citizens need to be more careful.

The Indian Embassy said that Indian citizens who want to go to Iran for any purpose should postpone their travel for the time being until the security situation improves.

Consider leaving the country

It advised Indians present in Iran to consider exiting the country for some time through available flights. The embassy said that those who decide to stay in Iran should exercise extreme caution. It said they should pay attention to the news to stay informed about the situation and avoid going to places where there is heavy military activity, such as areas on the country’s southern coast.

Keep an eye on social media handles

The embassy also urged Indian citizens to follow the instructions of local authorities.
It asked all Indians in Iran who have not yet registered with the embassy to do so immediately and keep an eye on the mission’s website and social media handles for further information.

New concerns arise regarding security in Iran

This advisory has been issued at a time when new concerns have arisen regarding security in Iran after regional tensions and increase in military activities. In the past few days, the US has targeted bridges, desalination plants and power facilities in Iran, while Tehran has attacked US allies in West Asia.

Advisory issued during increasing tension

India has previously issued such advisories during rising tensions in West Asia and asked its citizens to get in touch with the embassy for help. The Indian Mission has also issued emergency helpline numbers for citizens in need of help.
