Typhoon Nol hit the coast of southern China (including Hong Kong) on Sunday morning and brought heavy rains along with strong winds. Due to this, millions of people in Guangdong province had to be evacuated to safe places, high alert was issued in the area and dozens of flights were cancelled. China’s National Meteorological Center said Nole reached the coast of Huidong County, Huizhou City, in southern Guangdong Province, at around 3:50 a.m. local time on Sunday.
The Hong Kong Observatory said Nol, which had maximum wind speeds of 145 km/h (90 mph) near its center, was moving toward the interior of Guangdong on Sunday and gradually weakening. Because of this, it was bringing strong winds and heavy rains in some parts of the area.
train services canceled
According to government broadcaster CCTV, by Saturday afternoon, more than 3 lakh 40 thousand people had been evacuated to other places in Guangdong province for safety. According to China News Service, train services in the province were canceled for Sunday. China’s National Meteorological Center expected heavy rain and strong winds to hit parts of southern Guangdong and south-eastern Fujian provinces over the weekend. Hong Kong Airport’s website showed more than 150 flights had been canceled for Saturday and Sunday.
Rain in parts of Taiwan
Local police said that as Nol approached Hong Kong, a large scaffolding on a high-rise building collapsed on Saturday afternoon. Police also said that according to initial reports, there was no news of anyone being injured. Taiwan’s Central Meteorological Administration said Nol was bringing rain to parts of southern and eastern Taiwan. It was passing over the sea south of Taiwan and moving away from the island on Saturday.
Storm hits coast in southern China
Earlier this month, Typhoon Bavi brought strong winds and rain to eastern China, forcing the evacuation of more than 2 million people. It hit the coast on July 11. Another typhoon, Maysak, hit the coast of southern China on July 3.
