Punjab-Haryana High Court has issued a big order regarding the mayor election of Kapurthala Municipal Corporation. While hearing the petition filed by Congress MLA and former minister Rana Gurjit Singh and 26 councilors, the High Court has currently put a stay on the post of Mayor. Also, Kapurthala Deputy Commissioner (DC) Akash Bansal has been appointed Administrator of the Municipal Corporation. The next hearing of the case will now be on July 30.
The High Court had given instructions to present the complete record, proceedings and video recording of the first meeting of the Municipal Corporation held on July 8 and the election process in the court. This order of the High Court is being considered as a big blow for the Aam Aadmi Party. On Tuesday, on behalf of the petitioners of the Congress party, senior advocate Chetan Mittal, Ajay Chadha and Kunal Mulwani and other lawyers presented their case in the court. He said that in the Municipal Corporation elections held on May 26, 2026, Congress and its supported candidates had got a clear majority in 50 wards.
Congress accused AAP
There are a total of 51 voters including MLAs in the corporation, which includes 27 from Congress and 24 councilors from the ruling party and its supporters. Despite this, as per the provisions of the Municipal Corporation Act, 1976, the first meeting was not called on time. The 27 councilors with majority were not given a chance to propose their candidate nor was the voting process conducted. Despite this, the officer announced the election of Aam Aadmi Party mayor and left the meeting venue.
Next hearing on July 30
It has also been alleged in the petition that elections for Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor were not conducted. Moreover, despite instructions from the administration, the entire meeting was not videographed and only some parts were recorded. At present, the High Court has stayed the mayor election of Kapurthala Municipal Corporation. Now a decision on this is expected in the hearing to be held on July 30.
