The US military said early today that it has launched a new round of air strikes targeting Iran. The Central Command of the US Army announced these attacks, which continued for the ninth consecutive night. Activists in Iran started reporting the blasts at around 2:30 am local time. The Central Command said in a statement, these attacks will continue to weaken Iran’s military capabilities, which are used to attack commercial ships and civilians (sailors) passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
The US on Sunday launched more airstrikes on Iran and announced the death of another soldier. These attacks were carried out in response to the killing of American soldiers. At the same time, Iran fired missiles towards Jordan, creating a danger of the conflict spreading to neighboring Israel.
Both sides targeted essential infrastructure
Increasingly, the US and Iran are moving closer to full-scale war, as an interim agreement reached last month to permanently end the fighting has broken down and shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz has largely halted. Both sides have targeted civilian infrastructure on which millions of people depend.
Revenge for the killing of American soldiers in Jordan
The US military said that a soldier died during the controlled destruction of an Iranian drone after downing it in Iraq on Saturday. Earlier, the army had said its strikes were aimed at Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard in retaliation for Friday’s killing of soldiers in Jordan.
One soldier went missing after that attack, and a new army statement said unidentified remains were found on Sunday and were being investigated. Since the start of the war, 17 American soldiers have been killed.
The fire of war is spreading in Israeli territory also
The new round of shelling, now in its second week, has seen the US target bridges, water desalination plants and power facilities in Iran. Tehran has attacked America’s allies throughout the Middle East. Kuwait, Jordan and Bahrain again activated air defense systems against drones and missiles coming from Iran. Israel warned that for the first time in weeks, fires could spread into Israeli territory due to missiles fired towards neighboring Jordan.
